My subjects vary as widely as the manner in which I photograph them. The common thread, however, is that my images are found in the everyday. One's daily routine is filled with fleeting scenes, patterns, images, and moments. As simplistic as these fleeting moments are, I find them equally as beautiful. The beauty of the everyday is what I seek to convey to the hurried masses.
I shoot with a manual 35mm film camera, for it affords versatility and mobility, while requiring me to think through the photographic process. With a manual camera, I am greatly involved in the composition of my subject, highly in tune with the properties of light and emulsion. When afforded no other alternative, I may use a flash; however, existing light is always preferred.
My photographic expertise includes digital equipment and a multitude of computer software, but my photographic philosophy eschews digital manipulation. I do, however, occasionally combine traditional black & white and color processes to produce a sepia image.
The number of prints I make from each negative is extremely small, typically one to three, but most often only one print is made in a particular size. Extremely limited print editions further my work by continually forcing me to explore and photograph new subjects. Additionally, limited prints help convey the ethereal nature of life's beautiful moments; for once a print is sold, it won't be seen again.
Having travelled all fifty States, and through much of Canada, Mexico, and Europe, I have discovered some of the most beautiful photography is in my own backyard.
I shoot my fine art images with a manual 35mm film camera, but when it comes to children’s portraiture, digital equipment affords the speed required by fast moving tykes, as well as the quick turnaround of the digital negatives required by parents.
Additionally, having photographed children for over a decade with a manual camera, the advent of professional digital equipment has elevated my photographic dexterity to yet another level.
It may appear that fine art photography and children’s portraiture reside at opposite ends of the artistic spectrum. In reality, they actually sit side-by-side on a continuum.
Fine art photography is about capturing those rare moments, where light, elements, artistry, and time come together -- capturing a single beautiful image. It’s all about the ephemeral moment. Children, however, are continually in the moment, but it takes an accomplished photographer’s eye, expertise, and finesse to masterfully capture those fleeting, one-of-a-kind expressions in a photograph.
